  A Brother Like That A Brother Like That A friend of mine named Paul received an automobile from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street urchin was walking around the shiny new car, admiring it. "Is this your car, Mister?"

  he said. Paul nodded. "My brother gave it to me for Christmas."

  The boy was astounded. "You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn’t cost you nothing? Boy, I wish . . ."

  He hesitated. Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the lad said jarred Paul all the way down to his heels. "I wish,"

  the boy went on, "That I could be a brother like that."

  Paul looked at the boy in astonishment, then impulsively he added, "Would you like to take a ride in my car?"

  "Oh yes, Id love that."

  After a short ride, the boy turned with his eyes aglow, said, "Mister, would you mind driving in front of my house?"

  Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the lad wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big automobile. But Paul was wrong again. "Will you stop where those two steps are?"

  the boy asked. He ran up the steps. Then in a little while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled brother. He sathim down on the bottom step, then sort of squeezed up against him and pointed to the car. "There she is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent. And some day Im gonna give you one just like it . . . then you can see for yourself all the pretty things in the Christmas windows that Ive been trying to tell you about."

  Paul got out and lifted the lad to the front seat of his car. The shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began a memorable holiday ride. That Christmas Eve, Paul learned what Jesus meant when he said: "It is more blessed to give . . . "

  男孩跑上了阶梯,过了一会儿保罗听到他回来了,但动作似乎有些缓慢。原来把他跛脚的弟弟带出来了,将他安置在第一个台阶上,紧紧地抱着他,指着那辆新车。

  只听那男孩告诉弟弟:"你看,这就是我刚才在楼上对你说的那辆新车。这是保罗他哥哥送给他的哦!将来我也会送给你一辆像这样的车,到那时候你就能自己去看那些在圣诞节时,挂窗口上的漂亮饰品了,就象我告诉过你的那样。"

  Knowledge collaboration and all-round education

  Ladies and gentlemen,

  We engineering students take it for granted that technology is changing incredibly fast. We are thinking nervously and seriously whether our colleges are failing to provide a foundation in the skills currently needed in industry. Take my major telecommunications for example. Scientists say that 21st century is a biomedical time, not an electrical time. But without the help of electronic data processing and transformation, biomedical technology alone cannot go too far. Funny enough, the word biomedical itself is just a combination of two disciplines. So the interdisciplinary exploitation serves as the critical part for our electric and electronics world as well as any other fields to find new way of being.

  But the power of knowledge collaboration is certainly not restricted to science and engineering; it is in the full community of learning. Walking around campus I absorbed a reality that there is a seamless web between students from different professional backgrounds. The engineering students are discussing animatedly in a philosophy lecture, speaking passionately in the public speaking club, and looking for sparkling ideas from learning history and arts. How wonderful that is! That, ladies and gentleman, is just a significant step forward to be well-rounded because once we jump out of the circle we can see the bigger picture.

  My friends, I hope that you have already got what university is all about. Please let me end my speech with the Nobel Prize winner Li Zhengdao’s words: “The realization of the perfect combination of science and engineering, science and arts, technology and humanity, is the greatest symbol of a university’s success.” Thank you.

  The power of yet.

  I heard about a highschool in Chicago where students had to pass a certain number of courses tograduate, and if they didn't pass a course, they got the grade "NotYet." And I thought that was fantastic, because if you get a failinggrade, you think, I'm nothing, I'm nowhere. But if you get the grade "NotYet" you understand that you're on a learning curve. It gives you a pathinto the future.

They said things like, "I love achallenge," or, "You know, I was hoping this would beinformative."

Theydon't engage with it. But on the right, you have the students with the growthmindset, the idea that abilities can be developed. They engage deeply. Theirbrain is on fire with yet. They engage deeply. They process the error. Theylearn from it and they correct it.

  So what can we do? Howcan we build that bridge to yet?

  Here are some things wecan do. First of all, we can praise wisely, not praising intelligence ortalent. That has failed. Don't do that anymore. But praising the process thatkids engage in: their effort, their strategies, their focus, theirperseverance, their improvement. This process praise creates kids who are hardyand resilient.

  There are other ways toreward yet. We recently teamed up with game scientists from the University ofWashington to create a new online math game that rewarded yet. In this game,students were rewarded for effort, strategy and progress. The usual math gamerewards you for getting answers right right now, but this game rewardedprocess. And we got more effort, more strategies, more engagement over longerperiods of time, and more perseverance when they hit really, really hardproblems.

In one study, we taught themthat every time they push out of their comfort zone to learn something new anddifficult, the neurons in their brain can form new, stronger connections, andover time they can get smarter.

We have shown thisnow, this kind of improvement, with thousands and thousands of kids, especiallystruggling students.

  So let's talk aboutequality. In our country, there are groups of students who chronically underperform,for example, children in inner cities, or children on Native Americanreservations. And they've done so poorly for so long that many people thinkit's inevitable. But when educators create growth mindset classrooms steeped inyet, equality happens.

In one year, fourth grade students in the South Bronx, waybehind, became the number one fourth grade class in the state of New York onthe state math test. In a year to a year and a half, Native American studentsin a school on a reservation went from the bottom of their district to the top,and that district included affluent sections of Seattle. So the native kidsoutdid the Microsoft kids.

  This happened becausethe meaning of effort and difficulty were transformed. Before, effort anddifficulty made them feel dumb, made them feel like giving up, but now, effortand difficulty, that's when their neurons are making new connections, strongerconnections. That's when they're getting smarter.

I nowrealize I've wasted most of my life."

  now if all this is true, then why are we getting it so wrong? why are we setting up our schools this way and our workplaces? and why are we making these introverts feel so guilty about wanting to just go off by themselves some of the time? one answer lies deep in our cultural history. western societies, and in particular the u.s., have always favored the man of action over the man of contemplation and “man“ of contemplation. but in america's early days, we lived in what historians call a culture of character, where we still, at that point, valued people for their inner selves and their moral rectitude. and if you look at the self-help books from this era, they all had titles with things like “character, the grandest thing in the world.“ and they featured role models like abraham lincoln who was praised for being modest and unassuming. ralph waldo emerson called him “a man who does not offend by superiority.“

  but then we hit the 20th century and we entered a new culture that historians call the culture of personality. what happened is we had evolved an agricultural economy to a world of big business. and so suddenly people are moving from small towns to the cities. and instead of working alongside people they've known all their lives, now they are having to prove themselves in a crowd of strangers. so, quite understandably, qualities like magnetism and charisma suddenly come to seem really important. and sure enough, the self-help books change to meet these new needs and they start to have names like “how to win friends and influence people.“ and they feature as their role models really great salesmen. so that's the world we're living in today. that's our cultural inheritance.

What is more, vegetation had been greatly reduced with the rapid growth of modern cities.On the one hand, the environment pollution and destruction are getting worse and worse in the modern world. On the other hand, the lack of knowledge about the importance of protecting environment hinders the solving of the problem. In a word, there is a long way to go before we enjoy a clean and comfortable world.

  To protect the environment, governments of many countries have done a lot. Legislative steps have been introduced to control air pollution, to protect the forest and sea resources and to stop any environmental pollution. Therefore, governments are playing the most important role in the environmental protection today.

  In my opinion, to protect environment, the government must take even more concrete measures. First, it should let people fully realize the importance of environmental protection through education. Second, much more efforts should be made to put the population planning policy into practice, because more people means more pollution. Finally, those who destroy the environment intentionally should be severely punished. We should let them know that destroying environment means destroying mankind themselves.

  To begin with , “what is the patience ?” The definition of the word “patience” is to tolerate delay , which implies self control and forbearance as opposed to wanting what we want when we want it. How many times have we jumped the gun and found out it would have been better to tolerate delay or had self control? What did we miss out on? Did we hurt someone we love because of lack of patience? Having patience will heal the wounds and it will work itself out fine. Patience is not only a virtue but a necessy for a happy existence that we must be more patience in our daily lives. Secondly , there are so many benefits of developing patience .It not only helps us reduces stress levels ,but also helps develop understanding, empathy and compassion .Furthermore ,with enough patience ,we may take enough time to assess the situation, see the big picture, and weigh any pros and cons ,which contributes to our better decisions.

  Someone may ask but how to become more patient .In my opinion ,many steps can we take .One way ,we may practice thinking before you speak ,if we’re patient, pause and go over what we want to say, we can avoid hurting or offending others .On the other way ,sometimes we may make a plan ahead and someway slow down our steps .Anyway ,what is the most important thing is that in anytime we must believe that there is an advantage behind every misfortune, that there is a silver lining.

  As it for me ,a teacher in the nearly future ,I think I should be have faith that I can make all of them understand what I taught .If some of them wouldn't follow me ,I will be also patient to analyse knowledge to them in details.

  Honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen:

  Kipling said:" East is east, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet!" But now, a century later, they have met.

  They have met in business. They have met in education. They have met in the arts.

  Some would argue that these meetings leave us with a choice between East and West ,but I believe the best future lies in the creative combination of both worlds. We can make Western ideas, customs and technology our own, and adapt them to our own use. We can enjoy the best of all worlds, because our tradition is, above all, one of selecting the best and making it our own.

  But, do Western styles and values threaten our identity?

  History makes it easy for us to think so-perhaps too easy.

  Some people seem to think that adopting Western customs, such as a bride wearing white-which has long been a color of mourning in China, instead of the traditional Chinese red for her wedding, is another submission to foreign intervention,--a betrayal of our heritage, they say.

  They fear that as we become "globalized", we will no longer be Chinese.

  I do not agree.

  History teachers that a strong and confident nation is at ease in hearing from the outside world.

  The wedding of Eastern and Western cultures, whether in white gowns or red, brings us variety.

  It is a rich banquet of special foods from all over the world.

  As an amateur gourmet of Chinese cuisine, our superb flavours delight me.

  But my Chinese taste appreciates food from any land.

  I even allow the convenience of McDonald's a place in my life without giving up my good taste.

  My grandfather taught me to hum tunes of Beijing opera from the time I was very young; they are deep in my spirit, part of my soul.

  I love Beijing opera, because it always reminds me of who I am.

  But I am also a fan of modern pop music, the No.1 fan of Spice Girls on campus.

  of course, it goes far beyond food, music and dance. It goes into values and ways of thinking about the world.

  Once upon a time, or so my teacher told me, a Chinese boy and an American girl had a squabble.

  Both wanted to keep a bunny rabbit they had found in the garden.

  Surely you've seen a rabbit sunning himself in the grass.

  Nothing is more lovable, nothing more natural. No wonder they wanted him. The Chinese boy played his er-hu. Happiness and joy, longing and passion, filled the air. The little rabbit swayed gently and began to move his ears in the direction of the music. He liked what he heard.

  The girl then took out her violin and played it to produce beautiful melodies of her own.

  The rabbit began to bounce in her direction.

  So intent were the children on their own music that neither paid the other any attention.

  The competing melodies confused the little rabbit and he did not know which way to turn .Unable to attract the little creature, both children gave up ;they walked away, in different directions, leaving the rabbit. . .alone.

  But, what if they listened ,what if they really heard each other's music, instead of always playing their own tunes?

  When I hear the music of a violin ,rich with the joys of men and women who came together and sang and danced.. . I hear echoes of the music of the grass lands, of the hills, of the rivers...of my own native land.

  Is music mine and yours, or is it ours?

  What I want to hear is the er-hu and the violin played together, in rhythm and in tune. Together, we can produce new and beautiful music, rich with textures and sounds that can only be made in harmony.

  The rabbit sits in the grass in the ever-warming sun. Waiting for us to play, waiting for the symphony to begin.

  Will he have to wait forever? The choice is ours . Thank you.

  女孩也取出小提琴,拉出悠扬的旋律。

  小兔子听了朝她跑去。

  两人都全神贯注于自己的音乐,丝毫没注意对方演奏的音乐。

  交杂在一块的音乐困惑了小兔子,它不知该朝哪走。男孩和女孩都不能将小兔子吸引过来,只好放弃,各自走开了,扔下小兔子独自一人。

  然而倘若他们倾听对方的音乐,而不是各自为歌,那么结果会如何呢?

  当我听到小提琴声响起,男男女女走道一起又唱又跳,乐声中充满了欢乐, 此时我也听见了草原上、山谷间、小河旁传来得我们本民族的音乐的回声。

  音乐分你我,还是属于我们大家?

  我想听的是二胡与小提琴的合奏,旋律与节奏和谐一致。

  大家一起才能创造出新颖动听音乐, 只有在和谐中大家才能创造出富有神韵的乐声。

  在温暖的阳光中,小兔子在等待着我们一起演奏,等待着交响乐开始。

  Christmas Day-December 25-which celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, the founder of the Christian religion, is the biggest and best-loved holiday in the Christian World.

  According to the Bible, the holy book of Christians, God decided to allow his only son, Jesus Christ, to be born to a human mother and live on earth so that people could understand God better and learn to love God and each other more. "Christmas"- meaning "celebration of Christ "- honors the time when Jesus was born to a young Jewish woman Mary.

  Mary was engaged to be married to Joseph, a carpenter, but before they came together, she was found to be with child. Because Joseph, her husband, was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

  But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

  Although the exact date of the birth of Jesus nearly 2,000 years ago is not known, the calendar on the supposed date divides all time into B.C. (Before Christ )and A.D. ( a Latin phrase, Anno Domini, "in the year of our Lord.") For the first 300 years, Jesus' birthday was celebrated on different dates. Finally, in the year 354, church leaders chose December 25 as his birthday.
